The Ferris wheel was designed by architects David Marks and Julia Barfield. The design of the automobiles is from Nick Bailey . The general construction was carried out by the Dutch design firm Hollandia. The axis of rotation and the pillars were created by the Czech engineering firm Skoda. The capsules and the stabilization system is from the French company Sigma. The drive was developed by the Bosch subsidiary Bosch Rexroth. On 10 September 1999 the Dutch specialist firm Smit Tak with one of the largest floating cranes on the earth assembled the wheel of the London Eye to erect it, but the try failed. Only a month later the wheel was first raised by 60 degrees. It took one other week to be able to carry it into its remaining position.
The Merlin Entertainments Group owns and operates the Ferris wheel, and is sponsored by British Airways . On the opening in 1999 it was nonetheless part of the Tussauds Group and British Airways and Marks Barfield Architects family together. In 2006 Tussaud acquired the shares of the opposite house owners in 2007 after which itself received taken over by Merlin.
Currently it's the third largest Ferris wheel within the world.
